- Start thinking about what you will do when you retire. Investigate hobbies, volunteering, part-time work, etc.
- Consider consulting with a financial advisor
- Learn about retirement savings arrangements and your options for when you retire
- Find out what government benefits you may receive when you retire
- Review the eligibility requirements for retirement under your retirement and/or savings program
- Review your employee benefit program (and your spouse’s as well) to see what happens to your coverage when you retire
- Evaluate your lifestyle and residence needs in retirement
- Take a look at the “Buying/Selling a House” life event

In this stage we recommend:
- Understand what you need to do with your retirement savings by the end of the year in which you turn 71
- Collect your proof of age documents
- Apply for government benefits at least 6 months before retiring
- Notify your employer of your intent to retire
- Apply for your retirement program benefits and/or decide what to do with your savings plan assets
- Apply to convert any applicable benefits (such as life insurance) to individual policies
- Review your employee benefit program (and your spouse’s as well) to see what happens to your coverage when you retire
- Apply for your provincial prescription drug coverage for seniors, if applicable
- Investigate individual health and dental care plans, if necessary
- Update your will; your Employee and Family Assistance Program can help
